Campfire Banana Boats

Banana boats are kind of like a cross between a s’more and a banana split, and are a super fun dessert to enjoy cooking outdoors. While they’re usually baked in the warm embers of a campfire, they can also be baked in an oven on a cookie sheet. Try experimenting with all different toppings and find one you like best! Our other favorite topping combinations are: 2 tablespoons Nutella, 2 sliced strawberries, and 2 tablespoons chopped nuts; 2 tablespoons chocolate chips, 2 tablespoons caramel sauce, and 1 tablespoon coconut shreds; and 2 tablespoons chunky peanut butter with 2 tablespoons chocolate chips.

Step 1

If you’re making these outdoors, be sure that the campfire is ready. If you are making them indoors, preheat the oven to 350°F.

Step 2

Cut a 12-by-12-inch sheet of aluminum foil. Cut a 12-by-12-inch sheet of parchment paper and set the parchment over top of the foil.

Step 3

Ask an adult to help you cut the curved (concave) side of the banana peel lengthwise about ½ inch deep, leaving about ½ inch at both ends. Use your fingers to gently pull it open a little wider to form a pocket.

Step 4

Fill the middle of the sliced banana with chocolate chips, marshmallows and cereal. Wrap the banana in foil (with the parchment paper on the inside).

Step 5

Ask an adult to place the foil-wrapped banana, cut side up, in the campfire coals, away from any flames, until the toppings are melty and soft, about 15 minutes. If you’re using an oven, ask an adult to place the banana, cut side up, on a baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes.

Step 6

Ask an adult to open the foil pack carefully to allow steam to escape. Serve the banana boats immediately with a spoon.
